Semi-Mounted Rollover Plows

KUHN is the world’s largest manufacturer of rollover plows including the Leader, Manager and Challenger. They are available with 5 to 12 bottoms and provide faster, more efficient plowing with no dead furrows and less soil compaction. KUHN plows have many types of moldboards to choose from, depending on the season, soil conditions and trash coverage. Because of their linkage, these plows can work with equal power using more bodies than a fully mounted rollover plow.

KUHN Plows

Plowing involves turning over the top layer of soil, usually to a depth of 6" to 10" (15 to 25 cm). Plowing prepares the soil for planting and can improve soil structure, control weeds at an early stage and reduce the need for chemical inputs. For many farmers, it’s a core practice that supports sustainable and efficient production.

What are the benefits of using a plow?

  • Controlling weeds: By burying weed seeds, plowing helps prevent their germination and reduces pressure from problem species. By limiting weed emergence and disease pressure, it allows farmers to cut back on herbicide use. It’s also useful in cases of herbicide resistance, where active ingredients are no longer effective against certain weeds.
  • Reducing disease and pests: Plowing also interrupts the lifecycle of certain pests and insects by disturbing their habitats and burying their eggs, helping reduce pest pressure and crop losses. The same applies to certain fungal diseases, like Fusarium in wheat or ergot in cereals, which spread through contaminated crop residues.
  • Creating a uniform seedbed: Plowing creates a uniform seedbed to promote quick germination and allow for easy root exploration for uniform crop development. A well-prepared top layer of soil provides a solid foundation for achieving high yields.

What are the parts of a plow?

Plows consist of many parts, including the frame, shares, points, shins and moldboards.

  • Frame: The frame acts as the foundation of the plow, allowing to easily attach to the tractor, while also holding all major components.
  • Share: The purpose of the share is to slice into the soil at the desired working depth. The soil glides over the share, to the shin, and then onto the moldboard. This creates a mixing action for optimum burial and breakdown of crop residue.
  • Points: Plow points are wearing parts attached to the shares to improve soil penetration, while reducing wear and offering protection to other parts of the plow.
  • Shin: The shin is a triangular piece attached to the front of the moldboard that serves assists with soil penetration, especially in harder ground. The shin wears faster than the moldboard, but is more cost effective to replace, reducing overall operating costs.
  • Moldboard: Located behind the share, the moldboard is a curved plate that turns the soil and helps ensure a clean furrow.

Mounted vs semi-mounted plows

Mounted Plows:

  • Attachment: Connects fully to the tractor's 3-point hitch, including the top link
  • Weight Distribution: Entire weight of the plow is carried by the tractor
  • Size: Generally smaller and lighter with increased maneuverability
  • Includes KUHN's Master, Multi-Master, and Vari-Master plows in both mechanical (Multi) and hydraulic (Vari) adjustment

Semi-Mounted Plows:

  • Attachment: Connects only to the lower two lift arms of the tractor's 3-point hitch
  • Weight Distribution: One or more wheels support the back of the plow's frame
  • Size: Generally larger and designed with heavy-duty applications in mind
  • Includes KUHN's Multi-Leader, Vari-Leader, Vari-Manager, Challenger and Vari-Challenger plows in both mechanical and hydraulic adjustment

Working Onland vs. In Furrow

KUHN plows feature two different configurations for operation: onland and in-furrow. Onland operation keeps all of the tractor wheels on the unplowed ground, while in-furrow operation requires running one side of the tractor wheels in the plowed furrow.
