HayBob

Well suited for the farm hobbyist and hay producers with small- to medium sized operations, these universal haymakers are made from heavy-duty components to give the machine a long life. Both models of the HayBob easily adjust to field contours when tedding and raking.

KUHN Tedders

Why use a hay tedder?

A tedder is used to fluff and spread cut forage evenly across the field and can accelerate the drydown process by as much as one to two days. This limits a forage crops exposure to weather threats, ensuring forage quality can be preserved in tight weather windows. For producers looking to make dry hay, tedders can make the difference between a quality crop and one with risk of mold or spoilage.

When should I ted my hay?

You should ted your hay when moisture is still high but it's beginning to dry. Typically, this is shortly after the mower, before the hay starts to wilt excessively. Tedding too early can increase leaf loss, while tedding too late may not improve drying efficiency as much. Timing depends on weather conditions and forage type.

Trailed vs mounted tedders

Rotary tedders come in both trailed and mounted configurations. Trailed models utilize a drawbar hitch and set of wheels to support the frame of the tedder. Mounted models connect directly to the tractor's 3-point hitch. Both types have their advantages:

Trailed tedders:

  • Generally have a lower horsepower requirement compared to their mounted counterpart
  • Improved road transport at higher speeds
  • Available models: KUHN GF 1003 T Series, 17'1" to 56'5"

Mounted tedders:

  • Offer increased maneuverability, especially in smaller fields or tight field driveways
  • Lighter weight requires less tractor lifting power
  • Available models: KUHN GF 1003 Series 21'4" to 35'5" working widths

What are the available working widths of KUHN tedders?

KUHN offers two basket tedders with a working width of 8'6" (2.6 m) up to 16 basket tedders with a working width of 56'6" (17.2 m).

Adjusting a tedder

The most important adjustments on a tedder are tine angle and tedding height adjustment.

The tine angle setting determines crop spreading and turning which influences delivery precision and exposure to the sun. A lever under each rotor allows you to adjust this setting. In high position, the lever facilitates work in dense crop, and low position adapts to lighter crop.

Tedding height is adjusted using the tractor’s top link (or gauge wheel if the machine is equipped with one). The goal is to brush over the ground cover without getting too close to the ground. A well-adjusted machine limits impurity and soil contamination, ensuring quality forage and animal productivity.

With very short weather windows, machine adjustment is crucial to the success of the forage harvesting chain. A well-adjusted machine ensures a smooth harvest.

What tractor horsepower is required to run a hay tedder?

For effective tedder operations, the power requirement will depend on the number of rotors and the type of machine (mounted or trailed). Semi-mounted tedders are designed to be used with low- to medium-power tractors.

At KUHN, the power requirement varies between 30 and 140 hp depending on the tedder model.

What are the key features or benefits of KUHN hay tedders?

KUHN is continually improving its tedders help growers produce high quality forage for their operation. Here are some of the innovations, designed with improving harvest efficiency and reduced maintenance in mind:

  • With its reduced distance between the wheel and the asymmetrical tines, the OptiTedd rotor technology has excellent ground-following capacities for improved forage pick up and less dirt contamination. It was designed for reliability and longevity and works effectively in any condition, even the most intensive. Deflectors on the tines prevent the forage from wrapping around the tine and rotor, eliminating any extra weight on the tine arms. The deflectors also prevent the loss of tines in case of breakage.
  • The drive system with fingers, DigiDrive, ensures simplicity, reliability and requires very little maintenance in relation to cardan shaft systems. The gearboxes are lubed for life, and the tires are of top quality, ensuring trouble-free harvesting jobs.
  • On mounted models, the patented stabilizing system, which combines powerful springs with hydraulic suspension, protects the machine at work and on the road, even at higher speeds. It provides the driver with reliable performance and unmatched driving comfort.
  • The HLC (Headland Lift Control), available on our largest models, function raises all the rotors at the press of a button, making the machine easier to maneuver and preventing it from tedding the forage twice at headlands.
