The SB 1290 iD is designed to intelligently produce high density bales. Thanks to the patented TwinPact plunger system, the baler has a lower power requirement than competitive high density balers while still making heavier bales resulting in a more profitable baling operation.
KUHN Large Square Balers
How does a large square baler work?
The pick-up, rotor and feeder fork deliver the crop to the triangle-shaped pre-compression chamber or pre-chamber. Here the crop is collected and compressed into a flake or wad. When the density plates meet the required precompression, the flake is moved into the bale chamber. The bale is formed in the bale chamber by compressing flakes by a plunger. Lastly the bale is knotted by a single or double knotter system. After the knotters finish tying the bale, the bale automatically leaves the chamber via the chute. The bales come off the chute and are deposited in the field. Once the bale is complete, a new bale starts and the process continues.

Which crops can be baled with a large square baler?
Large square balers are very versatile. They are used to bale crop residues such as wheat straw, barley straw, oat straw, corn fodder and sugar cane. But they can also be used to make consistent bales of hay and forage crops such as grass (silage), clover and alfalfa. Large square balers are also increasingly used in energy and biomass crop production such as hemp and miscanthus.
What is the average weight of large square bales?
The average bale weight of a large square hay or straw bale is dependent on a few different variables. Those variables include bale density, crop type and moisture. Large square hay or straw bales weigh approximately 990 to 1,210 lbs (450 - 550 kilos). The target weight for large square bales made of silage is 2,200 lbs (1,000 kilos).
How much horsepower does it take to run a large square baler?
Horsepower required by a big baler is dependent on crop type, density of bales desired and moisture content of the crop. KUHN large square balers require a tractor's minimum PTO power of 105 horsepower (77 kW) up to 196 hp (144 kW).
